Sprezzatura is an Italian word originating from Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier, where it is defined by the author as "a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it". Studied carelessness, actually means that dressing is a skill.

I love beautiful images but the sheer amount available overwhelming and even exhausting.  Everyone has a different capacity to process visual imagery and learning to selectively edit prevents you from becoming submerged under other peoples outfits and choices. Just as with clothing buying less but better creates a more focused style so it is also true with all the beautiful photos available.

My New Year's walk around Whittle Lake on Vancouver Island affirmed the importance of being refreshed by beauty.  We were in a treasure chest of mother nature's jewels: iced droplets on branches resembling Elsa Peretti's diamonds by the yard. Shades of green to copious to count: peridot, tourmaline, jade. We were in a space that enchanted our souls…..

These 70's photos of Elsa Peretti show how effectively she dressed to present her personality, expertise and vision.  As a jewelry designer for Tiffany her clothes needed to be creative yet basic enough to serve as a backdrop for her designs. Basic means plain non-decorated. And as helpful as these items are, a wardrobe that contains only basic white t-shirts and shirts is frustrating.
